Dental Implants

Dental Implants are a treatment option to replace a missing tooth, or teeth. Of all the replacements for a missing tooth a single tooth implant is the closest to a natural tooth.

Dental Implants have many advantages including; an implant looks and feels like a natural tooth, after the initial period of adaptation its chewing efficiency is similar to a natural tooth, it is cared for and cleaned just like a natural tooth.

A dental implant is a replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is placed in the bone of the jaw and over time will bond with the bone. The implant then serves as the foundation for a replacement tooth.

When a patient has lost several or all of their teeth it may be possible for an implant or implants to provide the support for bridgework or a full denture.

What is involved?

At Jones Dental, the process of getting an implant will involve a consultation with your dentist to assess suitability and discuss all treatment options. Sometimes an implant may be placed at the time of extraction of an existing tooth, other times the tooth is extracted followed by some time to allow healing. If a tooth has been missing for a while it may be necessary to undergo a small surgery to prepare the site to take the implant.

After the implant has been placed it is often left undisturbed to allow it to integrate with the surrounding bone. Depending on the case, the healing time period could range from around 2 months to 6 months. Your dentist will advise you when your implant is ready to have a crown placed on top.

What are the pros and cons of dental implants?

Dental implants can be a great solution for replacing missing teeth, they look and function like your natural teeth and can improve your smile. They are fixed into the bone and so are firmly positioned so now worry when you are talking and smiling, and can be a lot more comfortable than dentures.

On the other hand, having a dental implant is not a quick procedure, it involves surgery, and it takes time. Having an implant done is a multiple appointment process with the end result of a tooth or teeth in 3-6 moths and sometimes longer. Implants can be costly as there are multiple components involved in the process as well as skill and expertise. Those that do go down the path of implants are often very happy with the outcomes and their ability to eat and show off their smile with confidence.

Is it necessary to have a dental implant after an extraction?

Not necessarily, there are there options for tooth replacement such as a denture or bridge. If you choose to leave the space be mindful that overtime teeth can drift, tilt or over-erupt. Implants are a good option for replacing missing teeth to improve chewing capacity and improve your smile.
