What is a Dental implant?
A dental implant is a replacement for a missing tooth or multiple teeth. The implant is placed in the bone of the jaw and the bone heals around the implant giving it support like the root of a tooth. When a patient has lost several or all of their teeth it may be possible to use implants to provide the support for bridgework or an implant retained denture.

What is involved?
At Jones Dental, the process of getting an implant will involve a consultation with your dentist to assess suitability and discuss all treatment options. Sometimes an implant may be placed at the time of extraction of an existing tooth, other times the tooth is extracted followed by some time to allow healing. If a tooth has been missing for a while it may be necessary to undergo a small surgery to prepare the site to take the implant.
After the implant has been placed it is often left undisturbed to allow it to integrate with the surrounding bone. Depending on the case, the healing time period could range from around 2 months to 6 months. Your dentist will advise you when your implant is ready to have a crown placed on top.
