Teeth Whitening

Tooth Whitening is all about improving the appearance of stained or discoloured teeth, or just to brighten your smile. Your dentist is best qualified to determine if you need teeth whitening and if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Your dentist can diagnose the reason for the discolouration and its type, and can then advised the more effective treatment for you.
At Jones Dental we offer two types of tooth whitening treatments; take home whitening and in chair whitening.

Teeth Whitening – Take Home

For take home kit your dentist first takes an impression of your teeth. A special thin custom tray is constructed to fit your teeth accurately. A small amount of the whitening gel is placed in the tray which is worn at home for the period of time recommended by your dentist.
A typical routine is to wear the trays containing the whitening agent, a hydrogen peroxide solution, for a couple of hours per day for two weeks.

Teeth Whitening – In Chair

In chair whitening is done while the patient is in the surgery. First the dentist will isolate the teeth to be whitened. Then a concentrated whitening gel is applied to these teeth for about 10 minutes, and then rinsed off. This is repeated twice, and the result is compared to the initial appearance of the teeth.

This method can cause sensitivity and is more suitable for patients who have minimal sensitivity in their teeth. It is a good option if you have a function or an event to go to and have limited time to whiten your teeth at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a non-invasive procedure that uses hydrogen peroxide to whiten the teeth. The procedure required can be done at home with our ‘take home kits’ using a whitening solution in a custom-made tray which fits over the teeth like a mouth guard. It can also be done immediately in chair over a period of 90 minutes.

How long does a teeth whitening treatment last?

The length of time whitening lasts depends on your teeth and can be effected by high coloured food including coffee, tea, curry, and tomato based sauces causing relapse to occur faster. Often there will be a discernable lightening for at least 6 months, some patients maintain their results for years. The take-home trays can be used to give the teeth a ‘touch up’ when needed using the whitening solution over a few nights at home.

Does tooth whitening always work?

Tooth whitening works in the vast majority of cases. Approximately 95% of people will have a discernable lightening of their teeth after treatment. Some people will achieve a really dramatic whitening whilst the majority achieved a very acceptable result. You can talk to your dentist about what shade you hope to achieve.

Keep in mind however that tooth whitening will not:

  • Lighten old fillings. For a filling to match the new whiter teeth it has to be replaced. This especially is a consideration if you have fillings or crowns on the front teeth.
  • Effect the discolouration caused by hidden decay or reduce shadow that can be associated with amalgam fillings.
  • Change the colour of stained calculus or similar deposits. A clean prior to whitening is recommended to remove these.
